Safety Precautions
While maintaining your vehicle is important, there’s nothing more important than your safety. If you’re going to work on your car or truck, please follow these general safety guidelines. You can find information on maintenance and service procedures in your Owner’s Guide.
- Do not work on a hot engine.
- If you don’t need the engine on, turn it off.
- Many cooling fans are automatic and can engage even with the engine off. To disable it, disconnect the negative battery terminal before working near the fan.
- If you have to work on your vehicle when the engine is running, tie back long hair and avoid wearing loose clothing, jewelry or anything that could get caught up in moving parts.
- Don’t work on the vehicle with the engine running in an enclosed space unless it is well ventilated.
- Keep all lit cigarettes, open flames and other lit material away from the battery and all fuel-related parts.
- Set the parking brake and ensure the gearshift is securely latched in park.
- Block a tire to prevent the vehicle from rolling unexpectedly.
- Do not start the engine with the air cleaner removed and do not remove the air cleaner with the engine running.
